ChatGPT 4o, also known as GPT-4o, (where o stands for omni) is OpenAI's text-generation AI model, capable of understanding text, images, and audio through a single neural network. ChatGPT 4o release date was May 2024 — it succeeded GPT-4, as the best AI model at the time.
For many users, ChatGPT 4o quickly became their favourite model thanks to its natural and empathetic responses, high accuracy and direct tone. Since its release, the GPT-4 generation has been phased out in favour of the more technically accurate GPT-5. However, many people still favour models ending in '4'.

One of ChatGPT-4's most significant advances is its ability to generate text 50% faster at lower API costs, compared to other models in the same generation. Despite this increase in speed, performance in the English language has not degraded.
This OpenAI AI model has a context window of 128k tokens and a knowledge cutoff date of October 2023.
In terms of raw power, as measured by benchmarks, it achieved a score of 88.7 on MMLU, beating its direct predecessor — GPT-4, which had a score of 86.5.
ChatGPT 4o vs o1
ChatGPT 4o is optimised for speed as a general-purpose chatbot, while the o1 model, released after GPT-4o, was designed for complex tasks. As a deep reasoning model, it had a much longer response time but delivered better results for coding at the time. However, due to its high cost, the o1 model never became popular and has since been discontinued. Its most recent direct counterpart is ChatGPT 5.2 Pro, which is available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers and via the API.
ChatGPT 4o Mini
ChatGPT 4o Mini is a smaller, faster and more cost-efficient version of ChatGPT 4, which, at the time of its release, was OpenAI's flagship model. The 4o mini is optimised for everyday tasks and offers balanced performance, whereas GPT-4o consumed usage limits faster, but was more accurate and powerful.
