ChatGPT Price Plans: Every Plan, Price and Is It Worth It in 2026?
ChatGPT used to have just one paid plan, but over the past year OpenAI has added a cheaper Go plan, three Pro tiers and seat-based Business plans, so picking the right subscription now takes some comparing.
In this article, we'll go through every ChatGPT price plan and break down its features, pricing and usage limits to help you decide which one fits your needs.
ChatGPT costs $8 per month for the Go plan, $20 per month for the Plus plan and $100, $200 or $500 per month for the Pro plan.
Of course, ChatGPT also has a free plan, but if you want to upgrade to a paid tier of the app, how much will it cost?
The table below compares all plans ChatGPT currently offers at a glance. The prices below are quoted for the US:

As you can see, the price difference between the plans is quite wild, going from just $8 a month to $500.
The $20 a month for Plus is standard in the industry, but Go at $8 is worth highlighting as it may be enough for light usage and working with text for many people.
On the other hand, we have the $500 a month Pro plan, which only a subset of power users, running hundreds of agents concurrently, will probably find worth it.
Breakdown of ChatGPT price plans
Now that we understand the overall pricing structure, let's break down ChatGPT prices and plans in more detail.
ChatGPT plans differ in available models, usage limits and extra tools.
Does ChatGPT have a free plan?
Yes, ChatGPT has a generous free plan which includes:
Unlimited everyday text chats
Limited image creation
Limited memory and storage
Limited voice chats
The unlimited chats are an especially cool feature.
The free plan uses GPT-5.6 Luna — a powerful model for text and everyday tasks. The only downside is that you might occasionally see an ad on the free plan, and the fact that the latest frontier models and advanced features aren't included, but that is to be expected.
Also, file uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis have separate limits on the free plan, and you'll typically be able to use them only a couple of times a day.
Also, sending messages into chats that have attachments counts towards a separate — much stricter — usage limit.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly how many uses of these advanced features you get as they run on a dynamic limit, but going by experience it's in the range of 3 to 5 per day, while messages in chats with attachments might have a limit around 10 to 15.
ChatGPT Go: $8 per month
ChatGPT Go is the cheapest paid plan, and it costs $8 per month in the US. Go uses the same model as the free plan, GPT-5.6 Luna, but gives you more of everything:
More messages with tools
More image creation
More memory and storage
More voice chats
Go is still ad-supported, and it doesn't include GPT-6 or Codex. So Go makes sense if you've run into the free plan's limits on images or voice, and you don't need a stronger model.
ChatGPT Plus: $20 per month
ChatGPT Plus is most likely the company's most popular paid plan, and it costs $20 per month. Plus is billed monthly only, since OpenAI doesn't offer annual billing for it.
Plus gives access to GPT-6 in chat with the Instant, Medium and High thinking levels.
Plus also includes:
Higher quality image creation
ChatGPT Work, an agent that works across your apps and files
Codex, OpenAI's coding agent
Expanded memory and 20 GB of storage
Email and calendar connections
Larger projects to organize your work
No ads
Note that GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most capable model, is available on Plus only in ChatGPT Work and Codex. In regular chats, GPT-6 Pro and the Extra High thinking level require a Pro plan. Plus also doesn't include access to the OpenAI API — the API is billed separately.
You might be wondering — is Plus enough for heavy usage?
For chatting, writing and studying, yes. GPT-6 at the Medium and High levels handles most everyday tasks, and when you reach a thinking limit, ChatGPT may continue with another available model. However, coding in Codex and long tasks in ChatGPT Work use up the allowance much faster, and Codex on Plus also has a five-hour limit.
ChatGPT Pro: $100, $200 or $500 per month
ChatGPT Pro is the plan for people who use ChatGPT all day, and it comes in three tiers. All three are billed monthly and differ mainly in how much usage they include:
Pro 100 costs $100 per month.
Pro 200 costs $200 per month and includes more usage than Pro 100.
Pro 500 costs $500 per month, includes the most usage and adds Ultrafast mode.
In addition to everything in Plus, Pro includes:
GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, and the Extra High thinking level
Dots, always-on agents
More usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex
Maximum memory and 100 GB of storage
Early access to new tools and models
Ultrafast mode is available only on Pro 500. It speeds up GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, but it also uses your included usage eight times faster than the standard mode.
At the end of September 2026, OpenAI lowered the included usage on Pro 200 for new subscribers, while the price stayed at $200 per month. People who had Pro 200 between September 22 and September 29, 2026, keep the previous allowance until October 29, 2026.
ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans
The Business plan is for teams of 2 to 200 people and is paid per seat. There are two seat types:
A Standard seat is meant for everyday work.
A Premium seat gives five times more usage than a Standard seat and has no five-hour limit.
This plan, as the name suggests, is geared towards teams and companies who need varied levels of usage across their different departments and use ChatGPT to help with various production tasks, from coding to marketing and design.
Business includes all ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex features and adds admin tools:
SAML, SSO and MFA
Centralized billing and administration
Usage analytics and spend controls
Connections to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365
No training on your business data by default
ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu are for large organizations and universities. Their prices are agreed with OpenAI's sales team. Enterprise and Edu include all Business features and add compliance tools such as SCIM, the Compliance API and data retention controls.
How ChatGPT usage limits work
ChatGPT has a unique usage limiting system that is different from other popular AI apps. On the free and Go plans, everyday text chats have no message limit, but tools like image generation, voice and file uploads have separate limits.
On paid plans, however, each model and thinking level has its own allowance, which is more typical in the industry and mirrors the system you'll find in Claude and Gemini.
When you reach the limit of one model, it becomes unavailable until its allowance resets, and ChatGPT shows when that will happen. In the meantime, you can switch to another available model.
When you reach a limit, you can:
Wait for the allowance to reset.
Switch to another model.
Upgrade to a higher plan.
Buy credits and continue in eligible tools.
Credits work in Codex, ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and they don't add usage to every model in chat. You can check your usage and buy credits in Settings > Usage.
ChatGPT also has a mechanism where you can trigger a reset of the limit, dropping it back to zero. You get a set amount of these when you first purchase the plan — it was 5 on ChatGPT Plus for me — and once they're used, they're gone.
ChatGPT API pricing
Apart from subscribing to one of the plans, you can, of course, bypass that entirely and access the models on a pay-as-you-go model. For that, you can access the OpenAI API.
This has its own billing mechanism that's separate from ChatGPT subscriptions. API prices are set per million tokens, and one token is a piece of text about three-quarters of an English word long.
Here are the API prices for OpenAI's current models:
Model
Input per 1M tokens
Cached input per 1M tokens
Output per 1M tokens
GPT-6 Astra
$10
$1
$50
GPT-6.1 Sol
$2
$0.10
$10
GPT-6 Luna
$0.10
$0.01
$0.50
These prices apply to prompts shorter than 272,000 tokens. For example, a request with 2,000 input tokens and 1,000 output tokens costs about $0.07 on GPT-6 Astra and about $0.01 on GPT-6.1 Sol.
Batch processing costs 50% less than standard requests, and web search costs an extra $10 per 1,000 calls.
ChatGPT API vs subscription: which is cheaper?
Now, if the numbers above don't really mean much, you might be wondering which is more cost-efficient practically — a subscription or an API. To make a long story short, subscription is almost always more cost-efficient than API pricing.
You only really want to use the API when you need to integrate OpenAI models into apps or autonomous systems that can't be served by Codex, or you do very light work with text.
There's a caveat to the above. On the API, you pay for every token, so the cost of a task depends on how much text the model reads and writes.
This can compound quickly, because in a chat, every new message sends the whole conversation to the model again, so long chats and agentic tasks cost more than a single request.
Consider the below breakdown, which compares approximate cost of various tasks in the API on two models:
Task
GPT-6.1 Sol
GPT-6 Astra
Writing a blog article with two or three rounds of edits
about $0.20
about $1
In-depth research with about 25 web searches
about $0.75
about $2.75
Building a landing page in Codex over several iterations
about $1.30
about $8
For example, writing an article with a few rounds of edits takes about 30,000 input tokens and 15,000 output tokens. In-depth research takes about 200,000 input tokens, and building a landing page in Codex can take around 3 million tokens.
For writing and research, the API can be cheaper than a subscription.
If you write an article every working day and run two research tasks a week on GPT-6.1 Sol, the API costs about $10 per month, which is half the price of Plus. On GPT-6 Astra, the same work costs about $43 per month.
For coding, a subscription is much cheaper. If you build four pages like the one above every working day in Codex, the API costs about $100 per month on GPT-6.1 Sol and about $640 per month on GPT-6 Astra, while Plus costs $20 and Pro starts at $100.
This works out like that because the subscription, under the hood, essentially sells you the same tokens that you pay for when using the API at a discount. In the coding example above, that discount is about 80% on Plus compared with GPT-6.1 Sol and about 85% on Pro 100 compared with GPT-6 Astra.
Is a ChatGPT subscription worth it?
ChatGPT probably offers one of the most, if not the most, well-rounded subscription offerings on the market. There are a couple of reasons for this:
The models are among the best in the industry
The ChatGPT app — online, on mobile, and on desktop — is extremely polished
It comes with all the tools you need to work with text and code
If you use ChatGPT every day for work or study, then ChatGPT Plus is more than worth it.
For $20 per month, you get GPT-6 with the higher thinking levels, Codex, ChatGPT Work and no ads, and that's the same price as Claude Pro and Google AI Pro.
However, with ChatGPT, the question to upgrade or not is more nuanced than with, for example, Claude. Claude excels at coding, which consumes a lot of tokens and only really shines when used with the best models — if you want to use Claude, you need to upgrade, really, and even the $20/month plan might not cut it.
With ChatGPT, however, the app is more well-rounded, equally lending itself to coding and AI writing, and the free models are excellent with unlimited messages.
If you mostly use ChatGPT for everyday questions and rarely use attachments, you might be just as happy with the free version as you would have been with the paid one — something worth testing for a couple of days at least before making a decision.
Finally, ChatGPT Pro is only worth it if you regularly reach Plus limits or need GPT-6 Pro for hard tasks. For example, when you work in Codex for several hours a day. Start with Pro 100, since Pro 200 and Pro 500 mainly add usage, and Pro 500 also adds Ultrafast mode.
A ChatGPT subscription is also an expensive way to use several AI models, since each company charges separately: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro together cost $40 per month.
ChatGPT vs Claude and Gemini: subscription prices compared
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have similar prices. The main plan costs about $20 per month, and the plans for heavy users cost $100 and $200 per month. ChatGPT also has a cheaper Go plan for $8 per month and the most expensive plan of the three, Pro 500.

ChatGPT and Gemini can generate images in the chat, and Google AI Pro includes 5 TB of cloud storage. Claude cannot generate images, but its paid plans include Claude Code.
Overchat AI — an alternative to a ChatGPT subscription
Overchat AI is an all-in-one AI app we've built that gives access to OpenAI models and to models from Anthropic, Google, xAI and other companies with one subscription. Overchat AI has the following OpenAI models:
GPT-6 Astra
GPT-6 Sol
GPT-6 Luna
The same subscription also includes other chat models, such as Claude Opus 5.5 and Gemini 4 Argon, and image and video models, such as GPT Image 2.5 and Seedance 2.5.
Overchat AI charges credits for each message, and the number of credits depends on the model. The Pro plan includes 8,000 credits per month for $14.99. The table below shows how many credits each OpenAI model uses per message and how many messages the Pro plan covers:

about 2,660
GPT-6 Sol

For example, we asked GPT-6 Astra in Overchat AI to plan a three-day trip to Lisbon for two people with a $600 budget. The reply cost 3 credits, which is about half a cent on the monthly plan.
In Overchat AI, GPT-6 Astra is available in regular chats on the $14.99 plan. Among ChatGPT's individual plans, GPT-6 Astra is available in chat only through GPT-6 Pro on the Pro plans, which start at $100 per month. GPT-6 Luna is also available on Overchat AI's free plan.
Since Overchat AI is an AI aggregator, you can access the same models through it, but you can't access ChatGPT's proprietary features like Codex, ChatGPT Work or Dots, so if those are important for your work, you might be better served sticking to the first-party app.
