The Checkup is based on research from the Love Lab, a laboratory John Gottman created at the University of Washington in 1986 to study couples. The lab was designed to observe real conversations between partners, using cameras, a two-way mirror, and sensors that measured stress levels during conflicts.
Gottman later founded the Gottman Institute with Julie Schwartz Gottman in 1996. The institute was acquired by Affective Software in 2023 and became part of Gottman Inc. More than 250,000 couples have completed the Checkup according to the company's website.

The app was founded in London in 2019 by Kevin Shanahan and Diego López, who previously worked together at the language-learning company Memrise. Paired raised a $3.6 million seed round in 2021 led by Eka Ventures, with Wise co-founder Taavet Hinrikus also participating.

Unlike couples therapy, Lasting does not involve a therapist. The company says 94% of users feel their relationship has improved, but that figure comes from an internal survey rather than an independent study. We did not find any peer-reviewed research testing the effectiveness of the app itself.

Psychology Today offers short relationship quizzes that usually take about three minutes to complete. Most contain around 20 questions and focus on areas such as relationship satisfaction, communication, and emotional connection.

The free version provides a basic score, graph, and interpretation, while the full report requires payment. Some users criticize the fact that the price is only revealed after completing the quiz.
